A Flower Left on a Winter Doorstep
It is the 1850s. A baby girl is left on the doorstep of a rural orphanage, days after her birth, in the deep of winter. They call her Pinkie.
She grows up among children with enormous hearts and bigger personalities โ Lil Nesta, sweet and feisty. Wilma, who carries herself like she already knows what the world will ask of her. Tater, with his reddish hair and his chestnut horse Rusty. And Molasses, who only ever wants to fish.
But beyond the barns and the back trails, past the mystery graves in the woody fields, the Darkhood Forest is keeping something. Something that has always known Pinkie's name.
The Spinning Room
The Warmth Inside
Under oil lamps and candle glow, the children of the orphanage made their world. Spinning wheels turned. Stories were told. And somewhere among them, Pinkie listened.
The Evening Table
Everyone Belonged
Dinner at the orphanage was nightly proof that something here was worth protecting โ children left behind by the world, who quietly became each other's world instead.
The Music Box
The Music Box
There are objects that carry memory the way water carries light. The music box was one of those. The moment it touched Pinkie's hands, something shifted.
The Leaving
Some Doors Close
Every departure leaves a shape in the air where a person used to be. This one would pull at the edges of everything that came after.

The Children of the Orphanage
Every one of them arrived with nothing. Every one of them became something extraordinary.
Left on the doorstep days after birth. What the Darkhood Forest holds has always been hers.
Sweet enough to disarm anyone, feisty enough to regret underestimating her. Has a crush on Tater.
Distinctive in every way. She walks into a room and the room rearranges itself around her.
Freckled, friendly, can be the warmest soul in the county โ or the most intense.
Give him a riverbank and a rod and he is the happiest soul at the orphanage. Until the River Cyclops.
No one has seen what's underneath the hat. The children have theories. None comforting.
She has a plan involving the Circus Snatchers. The children don't know yet. They will.
Steps out of the Darkhood Forest at the end of Book One. No one is ready.
